National Highways Authority of India (NHAI)

National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is a nodal agency of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH), Government of India (GoI). The authority is responsible for development, maintenance, management and operation of national highways, covering a total length of 70,548 km in the country.
NHAI was constituted by an act of Parliament namely the National Highways Authority of India Act, 1988. The authority became operational from February 1995, with the appointment of full time chairman and members.
The authority has the mandate to implement the National Highway Development Project (NHDP), which was implemented in 1998. NHDP focuses on upgrading, rehabilitating and widening major highways in India.
At present, the authority is playing a pivotal role in helping MORTH achieve its ambitious target of constructing highways at a pace of 20 km a day. For this, it has already initiated bidding process for 49 projects across the country worth Rs 51,148 crore. Once completed, these projects will provide connectivity spanning 5,074 km.
